Is that My President?

On Tuesday, this country took a 360 degree turn. An unscrupulous, racist, selfish, ignorant, hateful, and whatnot man is now the 45th President of the United States. I wonder how it happened? To be honest I do not know. I had so much faith and hope that this country would take a different path. A path where fear was not triumphant. Now only panic and anguish invade my soul. I fear the future of those I love, of my relatives, of my friends, of the millions of people living in shade in this country because they are undocumented. What will happen? I do not want the pointless propositions of that man to come true. The future that I was dreading now is my present.

How to feel proud of a person with so little ethics and values? Worse still, how can I refer to him as my president? He pointed me out, he despised me, he hurt me, he made me feel alienated in my own home, America. He does not know of needs, sacrifices, or scorn. A man with fame and money, someone like him cannot represent my needs or those of my people. Now, how do we change the perception of that man in the eyes of hundreds of children, those who were frightened by his words? Those who understood that this man wants Mexican immigrants out of this country, those who understood that this man devalues woman. How to change the negative image engraved in those who had the courage to get up along with their parents to fight for their human rights. Just like me those innocent souls feared this moment.

So, recognizing that I am an immigrant, I wonder whether I have actually been well seen and received all these years in this country. Maybe ever since I stepped on this land everything has been a farce. Today I am angry, sad and disappointed to know the true points of view of those who claim to be “true” Americans. How is it possible that even in these times people are so racist and discriminatory? How can a human being feel superior to another only because of their skin tone? I don’t understand! Nothing makes sense. Now my surroundings look different. I stopped feeling at home. I began to wonder if my classmates or teachers actually accept me for who I am and where I come from. Perhaps they are not as free from prejudice as they claim to be. Long ago I stopped feeling at home and today I feel less free than ever!

But here we are. No matter the circumstances, to this land we came and now it’s our home. Let’s keep our heads held high, we still have strength. We are fighters, workers, willing to help, to overcome, to desire. The dream is still alive, it is still present! May grace, knowledge, tolerance, respect, approval, commitment to serve others and not oneself live in our minds. Let us teach how to impart all those values that characterize us as immigrants. Let us not fall into the void of despair and continue to practice what some people lack.

To my immigrant community.

Me pregunto ¿cómo pasó?

¡¡No entiendo!! ¿Y si no?

A mi comunidad inmigrante.
